Description
There are many books on information problem-solving and a wealth of excellent information skills models out there. Yet few adequately address how profoundly a student's motivation can affect his or her success in learning and using information skills. There was undoubtedly a void in the professional literature, but it wasn't until two years ago that a small group of participants in our workshop on motivational techniques for information professionals urged us to spread the word to their colleagues. Thus, this book was conceived.
In the two years since then, we have learned a lot about the creative techniques that practitioners are using to motivate their students. What they lacked, however, was a systematic approach for applying motivational principles to their work. So we set upon documenting our framework for designing motivation into information skills instruction in a way that excites students about research and lifelong learning. We were not interested in inventing a new information skills model but rather in offering a way to enhance existing models with an overlay of motivational techniques and strategies. We also felt it was important to give a voice to the motivational challenges practitioners face on a daily basis and to share their many success stories.
