In working with educators every day who are down in the trenches making a difference in the lives of their students, I have come to realize something that is so, so exciting. We already have in place the talent and resources to transform our educational system in the United States. The problem is not lack of knowing how to develop our children and youth so they indeed reach their full potential. The problem, as with many complex organizations, is that significant parts of the system are broken. Thus, in many schools, a toxic culture exists—a culture that fosters built-in barriers to learning.
