Subject
The Church of Notre-Dame in Montreal
Description
I WROTE the first draft of Notre-Dame twenty-six years ago, a circumstance that would mark me as middle-aged
today, were it not for three young children who make
me feeJ otherwise. The book's origin were decidedly
modest, as a Master's thesis in art history for OberJin CoJlege, and I was as surprised as anyone when the Society of Architectural Historians selected it for the Alice Davis Hitchcock Book Award as the most distinguished book in architectural history of 1970. It has always been difficult to explain why the book has had such a devoted following; it was a traditional monograph on a building whose construction was marked more by ambition than by brilliance. But on reflection the enthusiasm with which Notre-Dame was greeted years
ago is in itself instructive about both the building and those who value it.
