This book would not have been possible without the teachers and principals who invited me into their classrooms and schools. These warriors of compassion are unrelenting in their struggle to create educational settings that are responsive to every child. Each of their stories illustrates the delicate balancing act they perform by remaining committed to public education, in spite of policies that are not in the best interest of children. I regret not being able to acknowledge individuals by name but must instead respect their requests for confidentiality. Thus all names of teachers, principals, and schools are pseudonyms.
