USING SIMULATIONS TO PROMOTE
LEARNING IN HIGHER EDUCATION

Description

For me, this book began more than 10 years ago as a post-J.D.
student in a semester-long capstone course at George Washington
University’s National Law Center. Professor James M. Brown,
who had mastered simulation teaching, taught this remarkable
course. I became fascinated. For the next 5 years, I did what I
could to assist Jim with the course, and in return he mentored me
in its design and administration. One semester we developed and
ran a 1-day simulation in another course. It was exciting to see
students learn substantive law by simulating roles in an actual
legal case during a 2-hour class. Later, we designed a simulation
scenario based on a complex environmental case that was being
played for real by several branches of the federal government, the
State of North Carolina, and private commercial interests. We
used real-life players in this 2-day simulation at a U.S. Marine
Corps wargaming center. The exercise opened eyes and propelled
participants years ahead in negotiations.
